No matter how much the season of Lent has prepared us, Good Friday overwhelms us. The crucifixion of Jesus is both terrible and incredible in the deepest sense; the ultimate act of human torture turned by God into the ultimate demonstration of redeeming love. That is why even though we know the resurrection of Christ is coming on Sunday, we intentionally pause to humbly bow in gratitude and worship before Christ upon the cross on Friday.

As Christ Church, we will gather for a Tenebrae service — a word that means “darkness, or shadows” — at 7pm on Good Friday. During our time of worship through Word, Reflection, Song, and Prayer, the light in the room progressively dims. With each extinguished candle, we watch the darkness grow, as it did for those hours immediately following the death of Jesus upon the cross. Finally, there is only one light left in the room – the Christ candle – the light of the world which even the darkness of death could not overcome (John 1:5).
